Installing Palmâ„¢ Desktop Software on Windows NT/2000/XP

In order to install the Palmâ„¢ Desktop software in Windows 2000/NT/XP, you first must grant administrator privileges to the specific user account. Then you can install the software as you would with any other software. After the installation, you can remove the administrator privileges from the specific user account.

From Tech Republic

Log off the current user and sign in as a user with local administrator privledges. then add the domain user account for the person to install the sofware to the local administrators group on the machine, there is no need to make him a domain administrator for this function, local admin rights will do. Then log in as the user and install the software. Make sure it works and then remove his user from the local administrators group. I have had to do this before with Palm software and it seems to work well. Good luck!

Notes from 8/21/06 meeting

  • palm41.dll placed in c:\ , users need modify permissions on that file in order to use the MM conduits.
  • don't list power user as a workaround
  • remove any reference to Domain admin
  • regmon and filemon as tools for querying which files and registry entries needed for programs
