Windows Phone 7 for Zimbra

Windows Phone 7 connects natively to Zimbra via Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). While Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is Microsoft's new flagship mobile OS, it does lack significant functionality that was present in Windows Mobile. Windows Phone 7 only supports basic Exchange connectivity, including email, contact, and calendar syncing, as well as remote wipe and PIN policies. The instructions below are provided for connecting Windows Phone 7 to ISC's Zimbra service.

Connecting to Zimbra via ActiveSync

Before connecting a Windows Phone 7 device via ActiveSync, new ActiveSync users must have EAS enabled by the user's LSP through the Zimbra Account Management utility via the Mobile Sync Enabled option in the Update Account utility. In order for access to be granted, the user will be requested to "sign" the PDA Terms of Service. After that has been accomplished, the following steps can be performed to begin syncing data to the device:

1. From the Windows Phone 7 Home screen, swipe left to the programs listing.
2. Scroll down and select Settings, then scroll down to and tap advanced setup
3. Enter the email address and Zimbra password in the appropriate fields. This is not necessarily the user's PennKey password. Once the password has been correctly entered, select Next.
4. At the Advanced Setup screen that follows, select Exchange ActiveSync.
5. In the Domain field of the next screen, enter zimbra.upenn.edu. Enter mailbox.zimbra.upenn.edu as the Server address, and ensure that the Server requires encrypted (SSL) connection box is checked. Account name can be set to Zimbra or any other descriptive name.
6. The phone will begin syncing. If not already enabled, a passcode for unlock should also be applied manually

Sync should finish in 5-10 minutes. Additional configuration of the account, such as how much historical email should be synced and how frequently sync should be performed, can be changed in account settings.

Enabling Passcode Unlock

1. From the Windows Phone 7 Home screen, swipe left to the programs listing.
2. Scroll down and select Settings, then lock+wallpaper
3. Slide the Password toggle to On, and enter a passcode
4. Adjust the Screen time out and Require a password after settings to something at least as secure as 3 and 5 minutes, respectively.

Changing Zimbra Sync Settings

1. From the Windows Phone 7 Home screen, swipe left to the programs listing.
2. Scroll down and select Settings, then scroll down to and tap email+accounts
3. Select the Exchange account.

Keep in mind that Windows Phone 7 has little on-disk protection of sensitive data, and information contained on devices should be considered forfeit. As such, it may be best to limit the amount of email synced to 3-7 days.
